Armenia has officially joined the World Region of Gastronomy Platform as a candidate for the 2028 World Region of Gastronomy title, becoming the first candidate from the Caucasus region to participate in the international initiative.
The platform, coordinated by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT), brings together regions that use gastronomy as a tool for cultural preservation, sustainable tourism development, and innovation in local food systems.
Armenia’s candidacy highlights the country’s rich culinary heritage, which has been shaped over centuries by agricultural traditions, diverse landscapes, and strong community ties. From mountain-grown ingredients and traditional bread-making practices to seasonal dishes and festive cuisine, Armenian gastronomy reflects a deep connection between land, culture, and identity.
By joining the platform as a candidate for the 2028 title, Armenia aims to strengthen collaboration between local producers, chefs, researchers, cultural organizations, and tourism stakeholders. The initiative is expected to support sustainable food systems, promote culinary education, and increase international recognition of Armenia’s gastronomic traditions.
The candidacy is supported by a network of partners including Green Rock Foundation, Dilijan Municipality, Tavush Destination Management Organization, Youth Cooperation Center of Dilijan, the Association of Restaurateurs and Hoteliers of Armenia, and Russian-Armenian University.
Participation in the platform provides Armenia with an opportunity to further showcase its culinary heritage on the international stage while fostering innovation and sustainable development in the country’s food and tourism sectors.
